Everyone makes fun of Twilight, because of the sparkly vampires.
It isn’t time to stop, but it is time to move on.
I could quite easily go into a rant about Judeo-Christianity, and how it’s supposed to be the cure-all for everything that goes bump in the night, but I won’t. What I’ll do instead is talk about the need to make vampires a thing to be feared again.
Because of its pervasiveness in the west, the vampire has “evolved” from a thing that was terrifying into something that people want to be. Twilight is a perfect example of that. People don’t see the horror of something that is now undead; the see the aristocracy that is embodied in Bela Lugosi as Dracula.
Comic books are no different, when they deign to bring up the vampire at all.
How do you bring back the horror of vampires? By not romanticizing them or sexualizing them. By making them something to be feared, much like the modern zombie. If you’re afraid of having your body sucked of all its blood, and then turned into an unliving thing that feeds upon the blood of the living, more than likely going after your family first…you’d be afraid of that, no?
Guillermo del Toro is doing it right with The Strain. That was a book, and now it’s a television series.
Time to bring its equivalent to comics.
