Doing The Important Work

I had a conversation over Twitter a few days ago.

The conversation reminded me that the work we do is important. Sometimes it’s difficult, and often only as difficult as we make it, but the ease or level of difficulty has no bearing on the importance of the work that we do.

We wouldn’t do this work if it wasn’t important. There are other mediums in which we could do work, but comics calls to us. It’s in our blood. So, the work is important to us, if no one else.

Because the work is important, we want to do it to the best of our abilities. Not only that, we want to reach to exceed our grasp. We want to create something that others will feel is important, as well.

Superman, the X-Men, Batman, the Hulk, Spawn, Hellboy, and more… These are characters that have been created, whose original purpose has been eclipsed and has taken on new meaning, and which have become important to others besides the original creators. These characters have outlived some of their creators, and others may outlive them still.

Because they did important work.

Only the important work is worth doing.
