If You Don’t Know Your Business, Get Out Now

Pretty bold statement, right? Nonetheless, it’s true.

If you’re a hobbyist, you’re fine. You’re doing it for the love, and not because you plan to make it into a career. Not because you plan on making any money whatsoever in comics. I’m not talking to you, hobbyist. You’re fine. I’m talking to the person sitting to the left of you.

You, who wants to create an empire out of your comic, Shlump the Lemon. You want the comics, you want toys (plush and plastic), you want t-shirts, cartoons, movies, novelizations, lunch boxes, band-aids, plates, cups, cards, glasses, and whatever else you can think of. You want everyone to be a Shlump-lover. You want to be the overlord of the Shlump-mind.

But you don’t know the first thing about getting a comic created. What page size are you going to have your books in? How many pages is your book going to be? How are you planning on selling the book? Do you use a semi-colon in dialogue? What are you going to do with the extra page space in your book? Do you have any idea why you’re going to have extra non-story pages in your book?

Those questions are just the tip of the iceberg, and you have no idea as to what I’m talking about, right? “It’s all going to be standard, like Marvel!”

Uh huh.

Know your business. Understand what you’re selling, learn how to sell it, and the best places for where you can sell it. If you want Shlump the Lemon to be a success, you’ve got to put in the work in learning how this thing works.

Know your business, or get out now.
