ComixTribe encourages YOU to take the #ComixShare Holiday Challenge

| December 5, 2011 | 1 Comment

Apparently throwing down the gauntlet for challenges is my new thing.  But hey, if this one catches but a taste of the fire that #30Characters did, well, I think it would be a good thing for the comic market as a whole.  So, here goes…

Not a week goes by that I don’t read an article portending doom for the comic book industry.  At the same time, not a week goes by that I’m not astounded by the incredible work being done in this beloved medium of ours. Comics are as good as they’ve ever been.

Recently, an established pro-writer went on a bit of a rant about what he perceived to be the problems of the comic market, and chastised comic fans to a degree as being part of the problem.  Now, I think this pro made a number of excellent points and offered some good suggestions.  However, wagging a finger admonishing readers as not helping comics ironically doesn’t help comics either.

However, here is something that might.

I believe that WE have the power to grow the comics readership, and we can do it one reader at a time. I’ve been inspired by the great comic book advocacy work done by Joe Mulvey in his “What Do You Really Know About Comics” series of interviews, which prove that people’s opinions and interest in comics can change immediately…all it takes is putting the right book in their hands.

So, with this in mind, if you’re interested in helping spread the love of comics this holiday season, we invite you to:

 Take the ComixShare Holiday Challenge!

With the holidays coming up, it’s the perfect time to share your love of Comic Books and Graphic Novels with non-comic readers. The challenge is simple:
  • Select three people on your holiday shopping list who aren’t currently readers of comics. These can be people you ALREADY have to buy for.  (Secret Santas and Yankee Swaps count too.)
  • Carefully consider the current media consumption habits of the people you selected- What TV shows do they watch?  What movies do they love?  What video games do they play?
  • Buy one or more comics and/or graphic novels to give them as gifts this Holiday season. (It can be in addition to the Forever Lazy you were already planning on giving.)
  • Share what you bought, why, and for whom.  We’ve created a #ComixShare Tumblr Blog as a public forum to share these stories.  But you can also share your purchases on your on blogs, on Facebook, or on Twitter using the hashtag #ComixShare , so others might find the perfect book for someone else they know.
  • Follow up in a month to find out whether the people you purchased books for enjoyed them, and whether they’re open to more suggestions. Share what you’ve found out here on ComixShare. Were you able to bring a new comics reader to the fold?

Need help finding the perfect book?

Ask the ComixShare team for specific recommendations here!

You can also follow the #ComixShare blog for great recommendations from comic fans like you.  And if you want to recommend a book to be shared with the #ComixShare community, there is an easy submission form for that as too!

Thoughts or questions? Leave ’em in the comments below.  Hope you’ll join me spreading the love of comics this holiday season.

  1. I have a friend who is going to positively DEVOUR Jason Aaron’s The Other Side, and Scalped. How do I know this? He loves Vietnam war fiction, and HBO crime shows like The Wire and The Sopranos. Perfect match! Now I just need to find a 9″ x 12″ Xmas stocking…
